Thinking of joining an essential oil company? Who should you enrol with?

More and more people are becoming aware of essential oils, and all the amazing benefits they have to offer. You may have seen your friends posting about them on social media, or you’re seeing them all over Pinterest, or on your favourite blogs. Maybe it’s finally piqued your curiosity, and now you’re ready to dive in and see what all the fuss is about.

Which essential oil company should I join?

Which company to choose?

The biggest decision you have to make when getting started with essential oils, is which brand you will go with. I spent many weeks researching various brands before making a decision – and dōTERRA won my heart, hands-down.

You definitely want to avoid store brands – they simply do not have the quality, purity, or potency that will give you any kind of therapeutic effect.

(A recent study by the APRC showed that out of 50 brands of essential oils they tested, only 3 were not adulterated. That means that 95% of essential oil brands on the market are adulterated). doTERRA was one of the 3 that came in with a perfect score – thanks to the rigorous testing they do on every bottle of essential oils. The other two brands? One was a boutique brand that has to charge unsustainable prices – like $200 for a bottle of Frankincense. The other company was in the process of filing for Bankruptcy. Another leading brand’s test results showed that 50% of their oils were adulterated!).

And worse, they may contain harmful additives that can actually make you ill, or cause an adverse reaction. If you are seeking therapeutic benefit from your essential oils, not just looking for a pretty (fake) smell, then it’s important to choose therapeutic grade essential oils.

Do your research. You want to ensure they have been tested for purity and potency, and that the company is transparent with those testing results. To my knowledge, doTERRA is the only company that gives you full access to the GCMS results of every batch of essential oil.

Who should you enrol with?

Once you have settled on a brand, you’ll want to decide who you would like to choose as your guide and mentor on your essential oil journey.

dōTERRA is structured as a Network Marketing model. This was intentional, as when the executives formed the company, they realized that education was of paramount importance, and if people were simply buying essential oils off a shelf, they wouldn’t get the education and guidance they would need in order to use their oils safely and effectively.

The Network Marketing model is perfect for this, as it means that rather than paying for traditional marketing and overhead, doTERRA pays Wellness Advocates to introduce people to essential oils and guide them on their journey. It also makes the whole experience so much more personal. I love connecting with people and sharing my essential oil experiences.

With that said, the person you choose to enrol with is important. That person is your guide and mentor on your essential oil journey.

Unfortunately I am unable to personally mentor those who have chosen to enrol with someone else, as my time is limited, and my focus is on my own customers.

Generally, whoever introduced you to doTERRA will be the one who helps you open your account.

Relationships are super important!! If you have a friend or family member who uses doTERRA, simply ask them if they can help you set up your account. 🙂

You may wish to ask them if they are a product user, or if they are doing this as a business. Ask them if they are willing to support you on your journey. If they are simply a product user and not wanting to help support you and direct you to resources, you can ask them to refer you to a leader on their team.

If you do enrol with a friend who is a product user and not actively engaged in the business, please ask them if their upline has an online community they can add you to! That way you get the best of both worlds – you’re connected to your friend, plus you have a larger community to tap into for support! On our team, we encourage everyone to enrol their own friends and family, and then add them to our online community for support!

What you don’t want to do, is simply sign up through the main dōTERRA website. If you do that, doTERRA will randomly assign you to a Wellness Advocate that you don’t know, and you have no connection with. It’s so much better to enrol through a friend, and get connected to their tribe.

I’ve had people who thought they enrolled with me, but I had no idea they had even enrolled, because they signed up through the main website and didn’t use my ID#. They are considered an ‘orphan’, meaning they get randomly assigned to someone they don’t know, and have no connection with. If it’s caught quickly we can send off an email to get it fixed, but it can take a couple of weeks. It’s definitely easier to follow the process from the beginning.

Questions to ask someone you are considering enrolling with:

  1. How long have you been doing doTERRA?*
  2. Are you committed to this for the long haul?
  3. How many people have you personally enrolled?*
  4. What kind of support do you offer after I enrol?
  5. Do you have an online community for continuing education and support?
  6. Can you help to connect me to resources?

*Note that someone who is brand new to this can still be an amazing mentor! They’re fresh and excited and want to help you. The important thing is that they are willing, and are planning to do this for the long haul… not simply ‘trying it out’ for a few months to see if it’s for them.

Do you simply want to be a product user, or are you interested in doing this as a business?

This decision becomes even more important if you’re considering becoming a Wellness Advocate yourself, and doing this as a business. The person you enrol with will also be your business mentor. While you can certainly do this without mentorship, it is very helpful! You will definitely have questions as you go, and you want to be sure your enroller can either answer those for you, or let you know where you can find the answers on your own.

As I mentioned above, it’s ok if that person is brand new to this and doesn’t know much more than you do – as they will have an upline to mentor them, and the training will trickle down to you. Duplication is the beauty of this business! We don’t have to re-invent the wheel; we have training tools and resources in place. The important part is that they are willing to support you, and that they’re in this for the long haul. You don’t want to enrol with someone who is going to disappear in 6 months.

Keep in mind that almost everyone who does this as a business, initially said they did not want to do this as a business! Most Wellness Advocates began as product users, who grew more and more passionate about the oils as time went on. I’ve had people start doing the business 2 or 3 years after joining as a customer, just by sharing their incredible experiences with their friends and family.

You truly never know what the future holds, so think long-term and select your mentor accordingly. Even if right now you think you will never do this as a business, you may change your mind one day, and you won’t be able to switch to someone else for mentorship.

If you have an inkling you may want to do this as a business, and your friend is not doing the business, you may wish to ask them to refer you to their upline instead. That way you’d be getting direct support from someone who is building this as a business, and you’ll still be on your friend’s team!

Why Relationships are So Important

Relationships are very important. If someone you are close with is doing this as a business, and you choose to join a different team – and later also decide to do the business, you are now essentially competitors. This may not seem like a big deal initially, but it can feel very frustrating if your friends and family members have to choose between signing up with you, or your friend or family member. If a friend or family member is doing the business, and you’d like to work with them, I’d encourage you to do so! Even if they are new and inexperienced. You can learn together!

So much beautiful synergy is created when you partner up with someone you know.

Everything is always so much more fun when you’re doing it with friends. Some of my closest friends and family members are on my team, and it brings me such joy to be able to work with them and see them grow and blossom! I love that we all work together and support each other. We get to attend team events and trainings together, and have a great time! Their success is my success, and it thrills me to see them doing well – whether they simply want to earn enough to pay for their oil habit, or earn a part-time or full-time income from home.

On our team, relationships come first! If someone enrols with me, and I know that they have an existing relationship with someone else on my team, I will almost always make that friend or family member their sponsor. That way we avoid competition within our team, and keep people who know each other together whenever possible. This also effectively means that they have 2 people to support them! Me (their enroller), and their friend or family member (their sponsor).

If you don’t personally know anyone who is doing this as a business, and you’d like to enrol with me, here’s what I have to offer:

For my customers:

I don’t “sell” essential oils, what I do is educate you and then empower you by helping you set up your own wholesale account. In doing so, you are able to order your own oils right from your computer or phone, and have them delivered right to your door. That way you can be assured that what you are getting is coming directly from the company, and has not been altered in any way.

(For this reason, you should NEVER purchase essential oils from Amazon or eBay – it is so easy to remove a cap, re-fill a bottle with a cheap oil, and apply a new sealed cap).

You will have access to the same pricing as I do – wholesale price – with no minimums or commitments.

Side Note: If you have a friend or a family member who is ordering for you through their account, please give some thought as to whether or not this is in your best interest. It is actually against doTERRA’s policy to share our wholesale discount with others. Not to mention it is completely disempowering (you are now relying on them to order your oils for you, rather than being able to order yourself whenever you want to), and essential oils and natural wellness is all about empowerment. It’s about taking your health care into your own hands. You’re also missing out on points and free products by doing it that way (your friend or family member is getting all your points & free oils!).

Everyone who uses dōTERRA should be ordering through their own account.

My job is to help you figure out what you need, which oils or kit would benefit you most, and then show you how to get them at the best price. I then do a follow-up appointment with you after you have received them, to be sure you are confident with using your oils, and answer any additional questions you might have. I will point you toward good quality, reputable resources so that you can look things up on your own and feel empowered to use these oils safely with your family.

I also have private Facebook groups just for those who have personally enrolled with me, or with someone on my team, where you can interact with and learn from others who are on the same journey.

For my business builders:

As a busy, homeschooling mom, most of my mentorship and training is provided online in group format, with individual coaching on an as-needed basis. I offer guidance and share my own experiences, but do encourage people to become independent and take ownership of their business. I post regularly in our team business group, and encourage teamwork and mutual support. I give my individual time to those who show that they are working hard and striving.

I will match my energy to your effort. I don’t chase people.

I let people build and grow at their own pace. I have been doing this for almost 5 years, and plan to continue forever. 🙂 I love what I do, and can’t imagine doing anything else! This is literally my dream job.

I will offer you mentorship and support, and direct you to resources, but I won’t build your business for you. I know there are other leaders in doTERRA who build businesses for their downlines, by enrolling and placing under them, but in my experience, that does not empower people. Most often, it leads to people quitting because they didn’t build it themselves and feel no sense of connection to their business. They are also not connected to the people who are placed under them, so they are unlikely to support them. When you build a business for someone, you are effectively telling them, ‘I don’t think you can do this yourself, so I am going to do it for you’. That’s definitely not the vibe I want to give off!

I’m all about empowering, not enabling.

Other than ensuring that people who have relationships with one another, stay together, I teach everyone on my team to enrol their own people, and then to teach their people to do the same. This is an extremely simple and organic way to grow and duplicate your business. Then no one feels like they have to enrol hundreds of people in order to be successful (because they have to build their own business, AND their downline’s businesses – who wants to do that??). You simply enrol your own friends and family, and then teach them to do the same if they wish.

I pride myself in keeping my business simple and duplicatable, so that literally anyone can do it. This simple duplication method is extremely powerful and can create exponential growth, and is how I built myself to Silver rank in 2 years.

2018 doTERRA earnings disclosure

Everyone knows at least a few people who could use essential oils in their life. If you’re considering doing this as a business, but think you don’t know enough people, remember it’s not just the people YOU know. It’s the people THEY know, and so on. If you adopt and teach this simple method of duplication, you can create an incredibly robust business.

What if I don’t have time?

As a homeschooling mom, I have built my business in the nooks and crannies of my life. I build mostly online, which has worked amazingly well, as I can still be home with my children and work around family commitments. I spend maybe 2-3 hours a day in total working on my business, and I take weekends off to focus on my family.

What I have to offer, is that I’m a living example that you can do this with very little time. Even if you work full-time, or have a family, or other commitments, you can still do this.

If you’re local, I can come and teach your first class for you. I encourage you to do a few classes to build momentum and get the ball rolling for your business. I did this in the beginning, and then transitioned to online and individual appointments.

This is a journey, and if you choose to take it with me, I am thrilled! But at the same time, I believe you should align with the person who you resonate with. And if that isn’t me, then please align yourself with someone who you feel is a better match for you. I want you to feel wholeheartedly connected to the person you enrol with, so that you can truly blossom – either as a product user or a business builder, whatever your choice may be.

Whomever you choose, I wish you all the best on your journey! These essential oils are life-changing, and I can’t imagine my life without them.

DISCLAIMER: I am not an aromatherapist, a doctor, or any kind of medical professional. What I share is my own personal experience with essential oils, and how they have benefitted my family. It’s up to each of us to do our own research to know if essential oils are right for us.
