The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Part 3: Books

The second category in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, is books. This was actually easier than I thought it was going to be, and took us just a few hours to complete. We started by going around the house and gathering up ALL the books. Normally I store books where they are used – cook books in the kitchen, sewing-related books in my sewing room, handwork books on our handwork shelf, etc. – but Kondo insists that we need to get the entire category in one place – and so we did. I enlisted help.

We sorted them roughly by category and then began discarding. I let the children handle their own books (I did have a peek through the discard pile before packing them up!), and I handled my books and the household/homeschool-related books. The kids wasted no time discarding the books that did not bring them joy!
We packed the discards up neatly so we can donate them on our next errand day.

And finally, the books that “spark joy” are returned to their rightful home on the bookshelf, sorted by category, of course! 🙂
And that completes books!! Next up is paper… stay tuned! 🙂
If you want to join in and have a home where everything in it sparks joy, then grab the book here, read it quickly, and jump in!

You can also grab this free, printable checklist and work your way through the categories (this is what I’m using! It feels SO good to check those boxes).
