Once you figure out how simple it is to make your own products, like hair spray, you’ll wonder why you ever wasted money buying them! This simple DIY hair spray is easy to make, non-toxic, and zero-waste. And you likely have most of the ingredients already in your pantry!

Traditional hair spray is one of those products that is extremely toxic to your health – not to mention, you’re spraying it into the air, so you’re breathing it in, it’s landing on your skin, as well as all over your bathroom.

There is also tons of packaging waste in products like this – hair spray bottles that keep getting re-purchased and then tossed away.

(Want to read other ways that using essential oils helps us reduce our waste? Check out this blog post).

When you make your own, you can use safe, natural ingredients (straight from your pantry!), and re-use the bottles over and over again.

It will only cost you pennies to make, and you can quickly and easily re-fill it, without having to go to the store (that is definitely a win!).

Simple DIY Hair Spray

What you’ll need:

1/2 cup hot water

2 1/2 tsp organic cane sugar

1 tsp vodka (or real vanilla extract)

2 drops of your favourite essential oil scent. (Make sure you’re using high-quality oils – see my favourite brand here).

Glass spray bottles

A small funnel (helpful for getting the liquid into the bottles without spilling).

Directions:

Dissolve sugar in hot water

Add remaining ingredients

Pour into reusable glass spray bottles using a small funnel if needed

Wait until solution has cooled before inserting spray tops

Watch me make it in this video:
